La Casa del Judío
CIVIL CONSTRUCTION |
14TH CENTURY |
MEDIEVAL ERA |
SITUATION: PLAZA DE ELIAJ NAHMIAS |
This house is opposite the Archaeological Museum, with its façade on Horno del Cristo street. In reality it is a combination of the ancestral home of the Medinaceli and the Casas Altas, joined by beautiful courtyards. This house is one of the most beautiful mansions in the city, and has two façades of different sizes: the main façade is in Rey Heredia street; the second forms part of the Jeronimo Paez square, opposite the Paez de Castillejo palace, which today houses the Archaeological Museum.
The house is popularly referred to as the Jew’s House, as its last owner was Elie Nahmias, a French Jewish businessman of Sephardic origins, who, from the time that he arrived in Cordoba until his death, was a passionate lover of the city. The house was restored by the architects Félix Hernández and Rafael Manzano. Cordoba Town Hall has dedicated the square behind the house to his memory, at the end of Cuesta de Pero Mato, in front of the Plaza Jerónimo Páez.
