SITUATION: PLAZA DEL DOCTOR EMILIO LUQUE |
This bust, dedicated to the renowned doctor Emilio Luque (Cordoba, 1876 - 1939), was unveiled on February 16, 1964. The rounded bronze half-length sculpture depicts the doctor dressed in his working clothes and stands on a pink granite pedestal.
Dr. Emilio Luque founded the La Purísima Sanitorium and the Academy of Medical Sciences of Cordoba and entered the Royal Academy of Cordoba as a full-time academic in May 1923. He was the founding president of the city’s College of Physicians and a regular contributor to local medical journals of the day such as the Ideal Médico, the Bulletin of the Official College of Physicians and the Minutes of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Due to his close links with the people, he was named Honorary Citizen of Cordoba on August 4, 1930 and later the City Council gave its name to a charitable institution established in the Alcázar Viejo district.
On a lighter note, Mª de la Concepción Luque Álvarez, the doctor’s daughter, was the subject of an oil painting by Julio Romero de Torres, as a commission from her fiancé, Enrique Luque, who gave it to his fiancée as a wedding gift. The painting, dated 1925, is a graceful work, depicting the young woman, with her back turned but glancing at the artist over her shoulder, in an elegant dress with a green shawl, sporting her engagement bracelet and clutching a flower and a book.
