This colossal statue, measuring almost 6 metres high and 3 tons in weight, in white marble and by the sculptor Marco Augusto Dueñas, was unveiled on May 21, 2015. The statue is located inside the Roman Temple.
According to the Roman annals, Claudius Marcellus founded the city of Corduba, or Colonia Patricia, which is now known as Cordoba. He was elected consul on three occasions: 166 BC, 155 BC. and 152 B.C. Claudius was a soldier and belonged to one of the elite patrician families who held the reins of Roman government in the Republican period. He held different titles such as consul, pontifex and general. A particularly gifted commander, Claudius led several successful military campaigns against the Spanish tribes, but in 148 BC, after being sent as an ambassador to King Masinissa of Numidia, he was killed when his ship was wrecked in a storm.
